Why So Many People Drink Kombucha (And Why You Should Too)

health-ade Kombucha

If you’re someone who’s never tried kombucha before, you may not understand why so many people love the drink, or why they feel the urge to tell everyone about it. So why do people drink kombucha?

Most people who drink kombucha do so for its unique taste, health benefits, and ability to serve as a healthier substitute for unhealthy sugary and alcoholic drinks.

In this article I'm going to share with you the top 3 biggest reasons why people drink kombucha (and why you might want to also). Let's get into it!

Kombucha Tastes Good

The biggest reason why people like me drink kombucha is because we think it tastes good!

Now before you argue that the biggest reason why people drink kombucha is for its health benefits, think about it. Why spend $4 and take an hour of time to get the probiotic benefits of a bottle of kombucha, when you could spend a fraction of the time and money taking a probiotic supplement or eating a bowl of yogurt and get similar benefits.

This is why I believe that even though the health benefits of kombucha are a big positive of the drink, they’re not the primary reason why most people buy the drink in the first place.

So what does kombucha taste like?

All kombucha has a sweet, vinegary, alcoholic, and fizzy taste. The bitterness, alcohol, and carbonation are naturally occurring products of the fermentation process.

Much of the sweetness comes from the initial sugar, and the added flavoring. Some flavors, like mango pineapple, will make the kombucha taste light and sweet, while others, like ginger turmeric, will make the kombucha taste bold and spicy.

While the unique taste of kombucha may turn you off of the drink at first, the fact that no other drink tastes like kombucha is what keeps many people drinking the stuff.

Because I wasn’t used to tasting bitter foods, the first time that I tried kombucha I didn’t like it. But after giving it a few more chances and time for my palette to adjust, I became a superfan of the drink, began making it at home and started this website.

One nice thing about kombucha's taste is that a lot of it will depend on the flavoring that’s used. So you could absolutely hate one flavor of kombucha, while loving another.

Some of my favorite flavors of booch are ginger turmeric, pineapple cinnamon, mango, and blueberry.

Kombucha Has Health Benefits

The 2nd biggest reason why most people drink kombucha is because it has a lot of supposed health benefits.

Now there’s still a lot of research that needs to be done on what exactly kombucha does and doesn’t do for your body, but we do know that it is a probiotic, antioxidant, and has all the benefits of the tea and flavoring it’s made with.

Probiotics

All kombucha is fermented with a healthy culture of living bacteria and yeast known as probiotics.

Probiotics are found in a lot of other fermented foods such as kefir, sauerkraut, yogurt, kimchi, and some cheeses, and play an important role in fighting off the bad bacteria inside our body and keeping us healthy.

Because the modern diet is full of so much sugar and processed foods that may harm the good bacteria in our digestive system, many people believe that we should be consuming more probiotics to replace and replenish these healthy bacteria inside of us.

Fermented foods full of probiotics like Kombucha may:

Tea

All kombucha is made from tea, and so when you drink kombucha you get all the health benefits that you would normally get from drinking tea.

Most Kombucha is made from a combination of green and black tea, which according to Healthline.com may:

Kombucha can be a Healthier Substitute for Soda and Alcohol

The 3rd biggest reason, and the last one I’ll give in this article, why people drink kombucha is because it’s a healthier substitute for other sweet and carbonated drinks like soda and other bitter, alcoholic drinks like beer and booze.

For example, kombucha may be able to satisfy a craving you have for soda because it’s sweet, acidic, and fizzy taste closely resembles that of a soda but with less sugar and empty calories.

I know that a lot of times when I really want a Coke, drinking a kombucha instead completely satisfies me, and leaves me feeling way better afterwards.

And because kombucha has a small amount of naturally occurring alcohol in it and has a bitter, harsh taste, many people have found that drinking a bottle of booch can satisfy their craving for an alcoholic drink.

Drinking kombucha instead of a beer or glass of wine will not only give you all it’s healthy antioxidant and probiotic benefits that I’ll talk about in a second, but it will also prevent you from feeling the negative side effects of alcohol such as weight gain, disrupted sleep, high blood pressure, liver disease, stomach damage, and more.

Final Thoughts

I am one among many that enjoys drinking kombucha for its great taste, numerous health benefits, and as a substitute for similar tasting, but less healthy drinks. If you’ve been considering trying kombucha and haven’t yet, I strongly recommend you give it a shot. And if you’ve tried kombucha before but didn’t like it, give it another chance. You may have just had a flavor you didn’t like, or your palette just isn’t use to bitter foods yet.
